Wearable Art Awards- 2010 Announcement
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 2009
PORT MOODY TO BECOME NORTH AMERICAN WEARABLE ARTS CAPITAL THROUGH WINTER
OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC GAMES
PORT MOODY, BC - The Port Moody Arts Centre Society is seeking help from the
City and other partners for plans to make this Greater Vancouver community
the North American capital of Wearable Arts, starting this May and extending
through the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Andrew Danneffel and Paddi Solem, Society directors who are chair and
vice-chair respectively of the Wearable Arts Committee, have set out the
plans in a presentation to Port Moody City Council. They said the planned
program will start Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10 with two 2009 Wearable
Art Awards performances at which a panel of selected jurors will recognize
winning entries with a total of $5,000 in cash awards donated by community
and corporate partners.
The performances, set for the Galleria in Port Moody City Hall, will be
followed by a presentation of entries at the Port Moody Arts Centre from May
14 through June 28. Danneffel said the Society intends to build from this
base to invite additional entries from across Canada and internationally for
a city-wide display through February and March, 2010, a period that includes
the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"We are aiming high," Danneffel said. "We believe the City of the Arts can
benefit artistically and economically from such a unique exhibition during a
time when world attention will be focused on British Columbia.
"Some 6,000 media members, not accredited to cover the games events
themselves will be seeking newsworthy events to cover and we believe we can
encourage many of them, as well as other visitors, to come to Port Moody to
see our Wearable Arts."
Artists from previous Wearable Art Awards will be invited to show their
creations along with entries from 2009 and those created for 2010.
The event, last held in September 2007, generally attracts up to 100 entries
from communities across Canada, in the United States and elsewhere. The
entries will be shown by models during Galleria performances. Deadline for
2009 entries for this off-the-wall art event is March 6 - and tickets for
the two performances will go on sale at the Port Moody Arts Centre after
March 10. Details are available at www.wearableartawards.com.
There are five categories - Open, Recycled, Headdress, Brassiere and
Olympic. Recognition also will be given for Best in Show, Student
participation, Conceptual Idea and "People's Choice", the latter based on
votes by the public at the awards performances and during the following
exhibit at the Arts Centre.
The Wearable Art Awards, begun in 2002, are presented by the Port Moody Arts
Centre Society - with support from businesses and sponsors who currently
include the City of Port Moody, the City's Spirit Committee, the BC Gaming
Commission, the Port Moody Arts Centre, Pacific Coast Terminals and Pasta
Polo - to encourage local, Canadian and International artists of all mediums
to submit evocative, imaginative and thought-provoking creations for the
human body. The imaginations of the participating artists are the only
limits on entries.
The works are juried in a three step process, initially by electronic
submissions, then by a panel of jurors drawn from the fashion and textile
arts industry. Each piece is examined for its creativity, originality,
skill in construction and conceptual idea. The final jurying takes place at
the performance presentations.

Confusion: Canadian Fusion?
IS THIS what sells Canadian Fashion?
Designer: Melinda-Mae Harlingten uses "Native fashion flavor" to help sell her brand during last seasons L'Oreal Fashion Week. Melinda's office was contacted for a general inquiry on the cultural appropriation and her ancestry. We were informed that she is non-Native but feels that it is her "Canadian Right' to use whatever influence she wants with her promotions. Her representative also told us that it was a form of flattery to our nations and our country.
Aside from the cultural confusion, her line is carefree- like the styling of the show.
Native Style?
Native Influenced fashion is EVERYWHERE. A Toronto local beauty struts her 'Native Style' boots in a fashionable red at the last L'Oreal Fashion Week. When asked where she purchased this pair of hot feet candy, she stated that she hunted and purchased her pair on ebay.Trend setting babes are stylin' the moccs, the muks, the fringes, the leather, the fur and the faux. The real question is...WHY aren't consumers purchasing Native Made? DO they even know about Native Made products?
We recommend to all fashionistas who are looking for that "Native Style" trend, to be a natural beauty and Buy NATIVE MADE.
Our Mukluk favourite: MUKS

Native Fashion in Canada?
Several of our Native fashion leaders attended the "Survivor Brunch" event following the recent L'Oreal Fashion Week . Hosted by Fashion Television's very lovely Mary Kitchen (left to right) with a panel consisting of some of Canada's top leading fashion insiders. Panelists included Fashion Television’s Jeanne Beker, Flare’s Lisa Tant, The Globe and Mail’s Amy Verner, Holt Renfrew’s John Gerhardt , and The Toronto Star’s David Livingstone. It was a lengthy session that seemed targeted mostly towards the retail industry and merging global trends. Some arguably stated that it was entertainment of unbridled and varied 'opinions' on the 'operations' of the Fashion Design Council of Canada and L'Oreal Fashion Week. The power session did breed a very strong message, and that was THE DIRECTION of "Canadian" Fashion Identity: on a global basis. Naturally this raised concerns with our indigenous designers. After all, we are the first fashionistas of this country! No need for a history lesson here folks- bottom line- our arts is our culture (and our country) and its been reflected for centuries through our clothing , design and artwork. Naturally Sexy! That's who we are...and everyone is biting and profiting from our inherent style.
Towards the end of the bitch session, .,..we bravely asserted the prestigious panel and raised awareness on the importance of cultural and intellectual protection on arts, style and fashion. We inquired why our Canadian Native designers are having no support from our 'fashion leaders' . Native designers are struggling to reach the mainstream market, an economy which is evidently thriving on Native style concepts. We explained our concern with the 'direction of Canadian fashion identity' and how we are an integral part of this proud country and vibrant, yet unrecognized contributors to the fashion market. This isn't just about style, it's about identity, cultural identity.
We asked why our Native, ahem "Canadian" designers are apparently denied industry support/opportunity...
...Flare magazine editor (Lisa Tant) tells us that Native clothes are "too costumey". (All one has to do is read their magazine and others to see how strong the Native style fashion concept is.)
While Jeanne Beker praised 'mukluks' and how she lovingly bought the pair that she proudly wears, from a Canadian designer in Winnipeg. In the same breathe she admits that she did not buy Native Made. GASP! (our view: she bought 'knock offs' by someone else)
Shockingly, these fashion industry leaders, icons and gurus have not or denyingly discovered the treasures of our celebrated and talented " Canadian" designers such as Dorothy Grant, Angela DeMontigny, Tammy Beauvais and many others who offer a quality and remarkable retail ready product.
At the closing of the bruncheon, we graciously accosted Jeanne Beker and got to have an interesting discussion on the retail products from Native designers. However, we have nothing encouraging to report on this conversation, at this time...(do we J'Net?)
indigenousFashion.com is promoting consumer support for our Native brands.
Don't buy the knock off's.
Buy NATIVE MADE!
